Running Start
Frequently Asked Questions

Can I stay in the class if I don't register for the college course?
Yes, you remain in the class and receive high school credit and do the same coursework as the students who have registered for the college course.

Are there any scholarships available?
High school students are not eligible for federal financial aid. From time to time, a limited number of scholarships become available for targeted students in the Project Running Start program. You can also speak to your guidance counselor or teacher about tuition assistance that may be offered by your high school.

If I register for the course do I have to go the college campus? Although we would welcome you at the college campus, you are not obligated to spend any time on the college campus. The entire course is taught on the high school campus.

Can I get a refund if I don't pass the course? No. Like any other college student, you must withdraw from the course early in the semester in order to receive a refund.

How can I find out if the college I plan to attend will accept the credits? You can contact the office of academic affairs at the college you plan to attend and inquire about their transfer policy. They will probably not give you a definitive answer because transfer of credits is evaluated on an individual basis and is dependent on variables such as the course content, your grade and your college major area of study. Always refer to your NH Community Technical College course, NOT Running Start or the name of your high school course.

Are there any other reasons I should enroll in a NHCTC course while I'm in high school? Yes. Enrolling in a college course shows that you are a serious student who accepts the challenge of college-level work. When applying to colleges you may indicate on your application that you have taken or are taking a college course.

Could my grade for the high school course be different from my grade for the college course? Yes. In some cases, your high school grade may not totally reflect your achievement in the college course because the high school grade may include assessments of objectives that are not part of the college curriculum.

Is there a minimum grade to get the credit? Technically, you receive credit for a C- and a D (not for an F). However, no other college, including other colleges in the Community College System of New Hampshire, will allow you to transfer credit to their institution with anything less than a C grade. Even if you plan to attend the Stratham campus, you are strongly encouraged to repeat the course if you earn less than a C. This will better prepare you for further study and will improve you Grade Point Average.

Will I receive anything from the college after I enroll in a course? No. The college no longer mails grade reports. You may access your grades on-line. If you have difficulty accessing your grades, visit http://seacoast.nhctc.edu/helpdesk.

What if I don't plan to go to college right after high school? Your credits will remain on file at the NH Community Technical College until you need them. You may request an official transcript at any time in the future.

What do I do if I have taken courses through another NH Community Technical College such as the NH Technical Institute in Concord? The seven NH Community Technical Colleges are independent. If you have taken a course through another campus you will have a transcript on file at that campus and you must request a copy from their registrar. For more information about the
Community College System of New Hampshire, visit www.ccsnh.edu
